bosingwa
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Porto for the £16.2m transfer of right-back Jose Bosingwa.

The 25-year-old Portugal international has arrived in London to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.

Bosingwa, who was also a target for Manchester United, was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but moved to Portugal as a child.

The full-back helped Porto to the 2004 Champions League title and four league championships since signing in 2003.

Bosingwa made more than 40 appearances for Boavista before former Blues boss Jose Mourinho brought him to rivals Porto.

Although he was used sparingly in his first season, the defender, who can also play on the wing, had been the first-choice right-back during the last three seasons.

His performances have earned him seven caps for Portugal and he is expected to be named in their Euro 2008 squad this week.

Alberto da Silva, a journalist for World Soccer magazine, believes Bosingwa has been overvalued by Chelsea.

“He’s a good player but he’s not worth that much money,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Chelsea’s current right-back Paulo Ferreira is a better player. I don’t know who negotiated the deal, but he did well for Porto.”

He added: “I don’t believe Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson would have been willing to spend that much money on Bosingwa.”

Three years ago, Bosingwa was involved in a serious car accident along with four other footballers.

All survived, but Sandro Luis, from a minor Portuguese side, had to have his left foot amputated as a result of the accident.

Bosingwa’s arrival at Stamford Bridge will cast doubt over the future of another right-back Juliano Belletti.

The former Barcelona defender, who scored the winning goal in the 2006 Champions League final against Arsenal, has been overlooked by Blues manager Avram Grant in recent weeks, with Michael Essien occupying the full-back berth.

mozilla
It is official: Mozilla’s popular Firefox browser will be coming to mobile phones in 2008.

Mozilla’s transition into the mobile market has been the subject of much speculation in recent years, but after citing an increase in consumer demand and the success of the iPhone, the tech titan has decided that now is the time to finally expand into the mobile-Web market.

“People ask us all the time about what Mozilla’s going to do about the mobile Web, and I’m very excited to announce that we plan to rock it,” Mike Schoepfer, vice president of engineering at Mozilla Corp. wrote in his blog. “The user demand for a full browsing experience on mobile devices is clear. If you weren’t sure about this before, you should be after the launch of the iPhone.”

A company rep wouldn’t give an exact date for release, but did confirm it would be in 2008.

The move means Mozilla will add mobile devices to the next platform set for Mozilla2, the next-generation browser technology also due next year. Schoepfer wants to make clear to the mobile market that it has his attention.

“We will make core platform decisions with mobile devices as first-class citizens,” Schoepfer wrote. “We will ship a version of Mobile Firefox which can, among other things, run Firefox extensions on mobile devices and allow others to build rich applications.”

An industry expert predicts the move will make a big splash with consumers. “The main competitors, Opera and Internet Explorer, have a reputation for being more problem-prone and Firefox is already very popular with consumers,” said Sarah Anderson, editor of Laptop magazine. “Mozilla has gained a lot of ground and consumers are going to be real happy about this move to mobile.”

Mozilla has yet to determine what their target platforms will be, but says it would distinguish itself from the iPhone, where Safari has exclusive rights to its browser, by being an open source product that is not proprietary for any hardware device.

The announcement comes after the release earlier this year of a new version of Minimo, a Mozilla-based mobile browser for Windows Mobile devices.

The Bugatti Veyron costs 1.2 million and is currently the most expensive and fastest factory built car in the world. Bugatti is a division of Volkswagon and will be available in the U.S. sometime this year.

I’m sure there are more expensive collector cars out there but nothing produced in the last 10 years is more expensive then the Bugatti.

The car is built by Volkswagen AG subsidiary, Bugatti Automobiles SAS at a production facility in Molsheim, France, and is sold under the legendary Bugatti marque.

prasad
Venkatesh Prasad, the coach of Bangalore Royal Challengers, has asked for patience and trust in those who are managing the team after the Indian Premier League’s second-richest franchise sacked its chief executive following a string of poor performances in the inaugural season of the Twenty20 tournament.

Terming Charu Sharma’s dismissal as “unfortunate”, Prasad feared it could send the wrong signal. “It was the management’s decision to sack him,” Prasad told Cricinfo. “Having known him, he is a fantastic individual. But it was unfortunate and it could send a wrong signal to the individuals.

“The hire and fire policy might work in the corporate world, probably,” Prasad said. “But we are building a team which came together two days before the tournament. So what is very important is to have a lot of faith in the team and build the trust and faith factor. You need to show patience and trust the people who are managing the team.”

Asked about pressure from the franchise on the team, he said, “I understand the franchise has put in loads of money and for them what is important is the performance, the outcome basically. You can’t do anything when performance is the key and so much is at stake.”

Prasad also said that though he was the designated coach of the team, he effectively “started handling the duties of the bowling coach as Martin Crowe, the Chief Cricket Officer, and Rahul (Dravid, the captain) handle the team selections and all the other duties”. He revealed that he had briefly thought about resigning from the job following media reports that the franchise wanted to sack him too.

sunil gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar, who was asked to choose between his ICC role and his media commitments due to a potential conflict of interest, has decided to end his eight-year stint as chairman of its cricket committee.

The executive board of the ICC had found Gavaskar’s dual roles untenable, and had authorised its CEO, Malcolm Speed, to ask him to convey his position when the committee met on May 5-6. Speed has since gone on leave

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the eight years I have held the role [of ICC cricket committee chairman], which is an honorary position, and it has been extremely fulfilling to be able to give back to the game through that role,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar said that his media commitments made it difficult to fulfill dual responsibilities. “However, with more and more cricket being played it has become clear that it is not possible for me to do justice to two jobs, the chairmanship of the ICC cricket committee and my media commitments.

“As an example of that, I had to leave my professional commitments as a commentator on the Indian Premier League matches in order to come and chair this year’s meeting in Dubai.”
